Under 16 Football and Hurling
Hard fought draw for U16Bs
U16F Div7 Syls 2-8 Scoil Úi Chonaill 3-5. After a slow start and conceding any early the lads got going and looked to be well in control up to half time with a good goal and a few nicely taken points. Scoil came back strongly in the closing stages and a draw probably fair enough in the end.
Juvenile Section looks back - looks forward
A very lively Juvenile AGM last night chaired by Ernie Brenner and ably abetted by Juv Sec Pat Hoyne looked back at very successful 2011 and forward to 2012. Pat and Ernie are staying on for 2012, Club Chairman Eddie Sullivan and Bar Manager Gary Penrose addressed the meeting and all representative positions were filled. Read Pat's report attached, it captures a very busy section and acknowledges all those that make it happen.

U16 hurlers lose to Faughs
U16HC B St Sylvesters 2-08 Faughs 4-07 It was certainly the goals that made the difference in this championship game even if the final score does not suggest that.
U16 Hurlers win at Bridgefield
U16H Div2 St Sylvesters St Johns Ballinteer Excellent win for the 16s after a few poor recent results. We stared very slowly and were 1-2 behind after 10 minutes but then we seemed to find our feet, goals from Shane Nangle and Paul Ryan and points from Collie Byrne, Alan Kavanagh and Nangle saw us level at the break. The second half was similar for a while but our defense of Eoin Mc, Karl Stacey, Eoin K tightened up, Hugh Murray, Joe Bannigan and Thomas picked up the pace, Ciaran Fitzgerald started winning puckouts, Paul Ryan goaled again and we won going away.
Lots of hurling going on
Good U16 game last Sunday against St Johns Belfastt Broomfield. The U15s won over Castlenock on Monday but lost to Maurs in the Slein Cup at Balbriggan today after winning over Dal Cais - thanks to Dwyers for organising. The 15s have a top 4 game against Crokes at Bridgefield on Tuesday. Pity there are still lots of players still away. John Drumm tells me we had U11 and U12 teams playing Camaint all Summer,
U16 hurlers lose narrowly
U16H Div2 We lost narrowly to Castlenock in an entertaining league game on Tuesday evening in Broomfield. WE had a mix of U16s and U15s (presumably Castlenock were similar)
U16 Footballers qualify for Div1 Shield Final
The lads came back from a 10 point deficit on Saturday to defeat Vincents at PNU and qualify to meet Brigids at Blanchardstown next Staurday at 3.30pm in the Shield Final.
U16s back to winning ways.
U16 Shield St Sylvesters 2-9 St Johns Balinteer 2-5 Somehow we ended up with a home match with plenty of confusion about the venue. When the game finally got going Johns almost ran away in the first quarter, two cracking goals and a few points against one sweet point by Alan Kavanagh. Then Collie Byrne stepped in with a fabulous goal from the right and we were finding out feet. 2-3 to 1-4 at the break but we drove on from there with a strong cold wind in our backs in the second half.
Jack, another star Hazely
Jack gave a great display of fielding in the U16 Championship today. Glenn has broken in to the senior team at wing forward while Ross has become the midfield powerhouse, Mark can be brilliant in both codes at minor while Aimee anchors the backline on the ladies team and was a glamorous Rose last week. Not too shabby lads.
16's late rally not enough against Crokes
U16F A Championship Syls lost to Crokes by 4 points I think. Very much a stop/start display by our lads, at times looking really strong only to then go out of the game for long stretches. Eoin Hamill at full back and Cian McCann in the corner, Alan Kavanagh and Jack Hazely in the middle were magnificent all through. Dara Walsh was the pick of the forwards and Jordon and Dylan threatened at times.
Goals key to U16 win
As the cliché goes, goals win matches and this was certainly the case on Saturday. 2 second half goals at crucial periods in the game helped us over the line in a keenly contested match. Having dominated for the opening 30 minutes with Colm Byrne lording it at centre back, we faded badly in the 2nd half against a stiff breeze and a spirited Johns comeback. Leading by 5 at half time, Johns pegged us back to a single point on 2 occasions but each time we hit them with goals from first Eoin Manning and then Shane Nangle. This victory was especially sweet considering we were missing 5 panellists through injury. Scorers: Shane Nangle 2-1, Jack Hazely 1-1, Eoin Manning 1-0, Colm Byrne 0-2, Eoin Kennedy 0-1.
Report on U16 win over Boden
This under 16 game got of to a flying start for Syls. From the throw in Jack Hazley caught the ball and delivered a long ball into corner forward Colm Byrne who turned his man and buried the ball into the back of the net. Two touches and a goal! Five minutes later Jameie Walsh chased a ball that looked to be going wide and pulled it across the goal where Paul McBride caught it and turned onto his left foot and slotted the ball into the goal. Boden reeplied 10 mins later with a goal from the penalty spot. It wasnt just goals that where being scored and the half time score was 2.05 to 1.05. The pick of the points was a long range effort from Alan Kavangh from over 40 meters.
U16s down and dirty at The Bridge
U16F Div1 St Sylvesters 2-3 Cuala 1-9 Mucky dirty afternoon, I was surprised the game was played but good that it was, even if our League Champions of 2010 were beaten by the Championship winners. Wet field brings out different skills and, unfortunately for us Cuala had them in abundance, cool on the ball, able to solo without hopping, that type of thing, and grinding us down in the second half with a grip on the middle of the field that we couldn't break down. It was an enjoyable game, two tough honest teams and we put in a good display to give us hope for the season. Panner and Deccy Barnes ran the line in the absence of Fergus.
U15 F Div1 Medal Presentation
Dubs star Ross McConnell came by on Saturday to present the Division 1 medals to our successful team Dave McBride and Fergus Byrne congratulated the boys and thanked them for their commitment and skill in both codes in 2010. Dave is stepping down, temporarily we hope, while Fergus goes to U16 with a new partner in Declan Barnes - we wish them luck in the coming season.
Nice piece on U15 Footballers in Fingal Independent
WHILE the first team celebrated league glory over the weekend, St Sylvester¹s Under-15s have also been reflecting on a glorious season after recently capturing the Division 1 title in their grade. The Malahide boys needed to record a first-ever win over Na Fianna in their final game to keep alive their hopes of clinching the silverware, and they pulled a top-drawer performance out of the bag to do just that. In a real rollercoaster match, . . . Marcus Cavaroli from this weeks Fingal Independent.
U15 Footballers take Division1
Congratulations to our U15 footballers who were confirmed as Division 1 league champions following Cuala's loss at the weekend. This is a great achievement for Dave, Fergus and all the lads, well done and richly deserved. It's a major achievement to take a premier trophy in this very competitive age group. Lots of U14s support this squad so it is a great club effort.
