Viva le Hurling . . .French student visit

A group of 38 students and their teachers from the Angers region of France dropped by to watch and participate in a Minor/U15 hurling session. The weather was not too kind but, fair play to Sandrine Lagarde and her crew, they were good sports and got the most from their visit. Thanks to the U15 lads for making up the numbers and to Bernard, Ronan and the lads . . . Viva le hurling!!

U16 awards evening

The U16 hurlers and footballers had their award and medal presentations on Thursday alongside the Michael Gaffney event. Great to have all the parents and players together for our last juvenile event. (Shay and Padraig's team had a night at Shelbourne Park a week ago). The football awards went to Gary Greenan and Dylan McEvoy while the hurling awards went to Killian Power and Barry Shearman.

Scoil Iosa lose in Junior Hurling Final

I heard the lads we devastated to lose to a last minute goal after leading by 6 points with five minutes remaining only to concede 2-1 in the final minutes against Scoil Catriona. The team was made up of our U16s and U14s. We had lost the senior final to the same opposition, also by a single point but there we had chased the game.

U16 hurlers win Division3

U16H D3 Playoff St Sylvesters 3-11 Crumlin 4-04 Congratulations to the 16s winning their first trophy after 8 years in a tense hard fought win over a fine Crumlin outfit in Bridgefield yesterday. We led from start to finish, by 9 points at one stage, but two quick goals mid second half brought Crumlin back into it and kept us on our toes to the death.

16Bs lose to Clontarf

U16 Div7 Top4 SF St Sylvesters 3-06 Clontarf 5-06 A good game, the lead changing all the time on a nice afternoon in Bridgefield. We gave up a few softish goals late in the first half, recovered after the break but missed a penalty and four or five scorable opportunities when we should have moved ahead. Clontarf finished strongly with four points on the trot, we got one back but gave up a goal just on the whistle.

U16 hurlers finish the season unbeaten

U16 Div3 The 16s recorded a high score against Parnells at their fabulous new facility at Chanel - wow, what a place, to finish joint top with Crumlin (we assume we have a playoff for the league).

Busy Syls Hurlers

We have six lads on the Fingal Minor Hurling team in the All Ireland C Final in Ashbourne next Saturday (see other article). Last Saturday we had four players on the Dublin U14 teams in the Tony Forrestal in Waterford (Eoin Cooney, Danial Murphy, Mickey Meaney, Eamon McLoughney) and four in the U16 All Ireland Blitz in Tipperary (Simon Owens, Ciaran O'Carroll, Shane Nangle, Barry Shearman).

U16 hurlers scrape by Crokes

U16H Div3 St Sylvesters 2-12 Kilmacud Crokes 1-10 Bit of a scare for the 16's against a smaller younger Crokes team who refused to lie down. After the high of beating Crumlin earlier in the week, this was a very flat display. Defensively we were mostly fairly solid except for a late goal but up front we made very hard work of scoring and relied on a couple goals to see us through. We play Crumlin again next Tuesday and will need a big improvement to see us through.

16 hurlers win to go top

U16H Div3 St Sylvesters 1-13 Crumlin 1-11 In a game we have looked forward to since last Autumn the U16s held out against the unbeaten Crumlin for probably our best win ever. Big thanks to Mick and Enda and the Fingal Co lads for preparing Bridgefield at short notice, it set a great scene for a fine game. The first querter was even stevens at about 3 points each before an Eoin Mc goal and a Ciaran O'Carroll point left us 4 up at the break.

16 hurlers delighted with a win

U16H D3 O'Tooles 2-06 St Sylvesters 2-13 With only thirteen players available due to vacation and Dublin duty we were a little worried travelling to O'Tooles, just below us in the league. Thomas goaled early, Eoin Mc and Collie pointed before O'Tooles rocked us with a goal and points to level it. Eoin Mc plucked a high ball to score an excellent goal but again O'Tooles responded from a penalty and we led by 4 at the break.

U16 hurlers win at Kilmacud

u16H Div3 Kilmacud Crokes 0-06 St Sylvesters 2-21 Slow first half when we led 0-07 to 0-03 at the break after weathering a lot of pressure from some very fast Crokes forwards. Ciaran O'Carroll and Simon got into their stride with some excellent points late in the half while Dylan, Killian and Matthew defended well and Danny, yet again, made a few good saves and his clearances were all on target. Simon goaled straight from the restart, Shane pointed and we kicked on from there.

16Bs win their Championship Shield

U16C Shield Final Castlenock 2-08 St Sylvesters 4-06 'Goals win games' the ref told us after our repeat Shield Final win over a very game Castlenock at their lovely new grounds. And how right he was, three in a short burst mid way through the second half, a lovely volley by Glenn Cosgrove and two from broken ball by Lee after Castlenock had led for a while.

U16 Quiz Night

Thanks to all who attended, sponsored and supported our Fundraising Quiz last night. After nearly 10 years together it was nice to have a night out where Declan Ryan compered and quizzed (and quipped, of course) but even the bould Deccie couldn't get a song out of Liam Foley (who did promise to sing for any €100 sponsor at the U12 Ardara fundraiser in a few weeks - John McCormack, take note). Thanks to John Shiels of Londis who always helps so many of our teams (and employs so many also) and Eithne, Philip, Mike Rosenel, Michelle, Declan, Kevin, Bernard, Archie, Mick, Padraig, Shay et al for prizes and help.

U16 hurlers win over Parnells

U16H Div3 St Sylvesters 2-13 Parnells 0-04 Like a lot of our games we defended very well, gave very little away again in the middle and scored enough of our chances. Eoin McCarthy and Eoin Kennedy did well in the corners, Ciaran O'Carroll and Simon scored some excellent first half points while Killian Power and Baz were strong in defense. Scrappy got a bad hand injury and we wish him well.

Syls Battle hard to earn a win.

U16A Div2 Football, St Sylvesters 3-11 Fingallians 3-10. Thursday evening saw another excellent performance by the U16A Football team at Bridgefield. Syls showed their intentions by coming out of the blocks scoring 4 quick points at the start of the match, only to see Fingallians come back with 3 points without reply followed by a goal putting Fingallians in front. Syls fought back getting back on top, only just and at half time the teams were fairly evenly matched.

16 hurlers win at Barróg

U16H Div3 Naomh Barróg 2-03 St Sylvesters 3-12 Two late goals and a couple of points made it look like a big win but it was not a comfortable win. Ciaran O'Carroll settled us early with a well taken goal of a pass from Eoin K, Shane and Ciaran shared points but a good Barrog goal held us to 1-06 to 1-02 at the break.

Five goal Glen Cosgrave leads 16Bs to Shield Final

U16C C Shield SF St Sylvesters 7-06 St Pats (D) 4-07 Shay and Padraic were talking down our chances against a strong Pats from two divisions above us and having a good season. Glen Cosgrave had other ideas, however, and after going 1-02 down and looking like we were heading for a tough afternoon, scored five goals to see us into the final for the second year in a row.

U16s battle hard but just miss out

U16F A Championship St Sylvesters 0-12 Cuala 1-14. A great second half performance, the ball bounced around the Cuala square a few times but we just didn't get the break after battling back to three points. Cuala got an early jump leading 1-4 to 0-1 before we settled and it proved just too much for us to overcome but congrats to Archie and Peter and the lads, it was a great effort.

U16As great win over Clontarf

U16FC A St Sylvesters 3-10 Clontarf 0-11Best display in years for a rejuvenated U16A team at Bridgefield today against a strong Clontarf. I could say we won it with a great defensive effort but, then again, I could also credit a hard working midfield or an excellent forward division, especially the full line. Maybe I'll leave it to Mike to give us the details. Next Saturday 2nd round v Cuala or Maurs at Bridgefield again, worth watching.

U16Bs lose at Lusk

U16FC C Chu Culainn (Lusk Man of War) 4-18 St Sylvesters 3-04 Playing a team from two leagues above them proved a little too much for our U16 B team in the C Championship at Lusk. We weren't helped losing keeper Conor Matthews before the throw in and Cian, Jake and Tommy out but Ronan Gaynor stood up tall and Sean Qiunn, James McKenna Byrne and Paul Ryan all battled hard throughout.
