Sinead Aherne top scorer in Dublin V Galway NFL game in Parnell Park

Dublin Ladies suffered their second defeat in a row in the National Football League against Galway, scoring 1-14 to Galway’s 4-11. Galway deserved their victory, being much more adept at carving a way through the Dublin defence than vice versa, with some Dublin players making too many basic handling and passing errors.

An outstanding feature of the game was Galway midfielder Megan Glynn’s

first half performance, carrying the ball with speed and composure and
creating penetrating passing movements that led to three of their four
goals, including one that she scored herself. Unbelievably, the Dublin
management left it until half time to take steps to curb her rampage; she
was frequently left unmarked during the first half.

On the Dublin side, the outstanding performance was Sinead Aherne’s top
score of 1-8, including a penalty, three points from frees and five from
play. Her ability to create space for herself and get in to scoring
positions was impressive as was her conversion rate with no wides and just
one ball dropped short. Unfortunately, only three other Dublin players
managed to score, including Nicole Owens who scored a point. Niamh McEvoy
worked hard at full forward and won hard ball to lay off to other players.

Dublin were within five points with 10 minutes to go and were showing signs
of mounting a fight back. However, they lost two players to yellow cards
thus giving themselves an impossible mountain to climb.

At the end of the round robin phase of the League, Dublin are joint second
with 3 or possibly 4 other teams, depending on the result of the postponed
Cork v Armagh match. However, Dublin’s big score difference (excluding
games involving bottom of the table Tyrone) means that they qualify for the
semi finals in two weeks’ time. If Cork beat Armagh, it will be Dublin v
Cork yet again. Otherwise, it will be Dublin v Armagh.

In the meantime, you can see our three Dublin stars play for Syls Seniors
in our first League game of 2016 against Clanna Gael / Fontenoy next
