U16 Football Cup – St Sylvesters 4 – 7 Cuala 4 – 4
This was our first game in this specially formatted football league for non hurlers. We fielded a combination of both u16 football teams. The lads gelled really well and gave a very impressive performance against a strong Cuala team. We started brightly and raced into an early lead but never got more than a couple of points ahead of Cuala. Our midfield of Niall Kelly and Shane Woods were getting through a huge amount of work.
The half forward line of Dan McEvoy, Pearse Gibney and Ciarán Daly were always available and provided plenty of supply to the inside forward line of Enda Fallon, Cian O’Scolaí and Conor Grehan. Half time came but despite most of the possession we only led by 2 points. As expected, Cuala hit us hard in the second half but some fantastic work by the half back line of Niall Delahunty, Shane Brennan and Alan O’Hara made it very difficult for the Cuala attack. When they did get through, our full back line of Niall Gaine, Rory Boland and Andrew Connolly proved more than a match for the Cuala inside forward line. Our final line of defence was our ever reliable keeper, Eoin O’Byrne , who made some tremendous saves throughout the game. We grew stronger and stronger as the half progressed and ran out worthy winners in the end. This was a really encouraging performance and one which all the lads can be very proud of. Roll on the next game in two weeks time.
