U15 hurlers too strong for Towers

Our U15 hurlers won their opening game of the season in Div2 with an impressive win over Round Towers Clondalkin at Bridgefield. The win was built on strong displays from Cian McCann at fullback, Simon Owens, Alan Kavanagh and the sharp looking Jordan Lawless at full forward.

Hurling managers make a lot of phone calls at this time of year. Squads thin out as players grow up and younger players have to grow up quickly to play above their age groups. The 5 under 14 players who lined out for the under 15s today played a major part in this successful opening match. Some of the under 15s had played their part with the under 16 team’s excellent win on Saturday.

A beautiful spring day and the majestic surroundings of Bridgefield are the perfect setting for a juvenile match. We started with the strong breeze behind us playing into the non extended car park. We played the ball in quickly to the claw of Jordan Lawless at full forward and he began shaking the back of the net. At half time the Tower’s goalkeeper said that he hadn’t expected an encounter with Joe Canning.

Jack Hazley, Dillon Doyle, Thomas Colcolough, Conor Dwyer, Karl Stacey and Alan Kavanagh were battling for and winning possession and feeding the full forward line. At centre half back Simon Owens played with great drive and determination. Cian McCann with fellow defenders Eoin Kennedy and Eoin McCarthy moped up any ball that came their way.

Philip Browne moved from goal to full forward and rattled the net as did Eoin Manning and Colm Bourne. Joe Bannigan got a couple of nice points from play. The hurling managers can sleep a little easier after opening wins for the 14s, 15s and an especially brilliant win for the 16s. For all concerned this was a very good start with the all important momentum going forward.
