U15 Div1 footballers great win over Ballyboden
As the team left the field at the end of this epic match the small ripple of applause from the smiling spectators was a fitting tribute. Dave McBride must have been bursting with pride but he settled for some quiet words with his players. This was a magnificent game of football.
St Sylvester’s 2-9 Ballyboden St Enda’s 3-5
Boden won the toss and elected to play with the aid of the strong breeze. The early exchanges were fairly even with both teams fully committed to winning possession. Boden scored the first four points. Their passing and pace were top quality. They then added a goal to lead 1-4 to nil with time ticking away in the first half. Paddy Power’s odd’s on the home team were now in double figures.
A disallowed goal for Sylvester’s was the catalyst for some magnificent football from the home team and they dug deep to produce two goal and two points before the break. Boden replied with a goal to lead by two points at half time
The second half was a spectacle with all the ingredients of a thriller. We began well and scored some beautiful long range points. Our defending was equally spectacular. The effort, commitment, passion and honesty from each and every player wearing the green sash, was thrilling to watch. Boden scored their third goal to close within a point but there would be no denying of victory to the home side.
Ballyboden were All Ireland Féile winners last year and they are a supremely talented team of wonderful footballers.
These lads of ours are not bad either. We could have sold tickets. Jack Hazley’s high fielding alone would have been value for money but above all this was a team performance of the highest quality. It had to be.
