Tribute to Liam Downey RIP

I was very sad to hear of the death of Liam Downey. I played for Syls with Liam. I knew from Colm that he had been ill in England for a while. Liam played as a foreward on our Sylvesters Adult team from the early 1980's. He started playing adult football at 16 years of age.

Liam was picked for the Dublin Minor team in 1982 and they went on to

beat Kerry in the All Ireland Final. This was a tallented minor team

and included Joe McNally in goal. Joe went on to win a senior medal

the following year V Galway. This Dublin team also included Eamonn

Heary & Mick Deegan in the half forward line and Declan Sheehan at

centre field.

This was the second last time the Dublin minors won the All Ireland

title. They won it again two years later in 1984 with a team that

included Des Foley Junior and Jim Stynes. Hopefully that will change

this year.

Attached is the official photograph of the Dublin Minor team from 1982

which was in the Clar Oifiguil for the All Ireland Final. Liam is

third from the left middle row. Lets hope Liam is remembered in Croke

Park on Sunday.

Mass for Liam

Thanks Eddie for the kind words. For those who would like to say goodbye to Liam, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for him in Malahide - probabaly a day or two after his funeral in England next week. I'll put a note up in the club when arrangements are finalised. All are welcome.
