St Valentines Day Trip Tyrrellspass

Syls new minor team managed by Chris Ryan & Panner are due to travel together with the new girls U16 team parents and supporters for two games in Tyrrellspass on Sunday 14th February 2010. The games are to remember Denis Glennon Snr. (Father of Ann Uí Mhordha) with the Denis Glennon Memorial Cup. Denis Glennon 1919-2005 played for Offaly in the 1930,s and 1940's together with his two brothers Paddy & Jack Glennon. They were all from the famous Rhode GAA club in Offaly.

After his marriage in 1951 he moved first to Rochfordbridge in Westmeath and later to Tyrrellspass in Westmeath where he became very involved in the local GAA Club first in Rochfordbridge where he played again, and from the early 1960's in Tyrrellspass. He was very involved in Tyrellspass GAA all the rest of his life and lived to see his grandsons David & Denis Óg Glennon play for Westmeath. Denis Óg Glennon was a member of the Westmeath team to win the Leinster title for the first time in 2004.
Tyrellspass have a link with St.Sylvesters dating back 30 years to 1980 when John Stapleton,Eddie, Ann & Big Pat McCarthy brought the U16 boys to Tyrrellspass to play the local U16 team. The match was played in Rochfordbridge as the pitch in Tyrellspass was not playable. St. Sylvesters won this match after a hard fought close game and were presented with a trophy by Moss. Fagen who had a pub in the village. Moss is still around and still involved with the Club. Some of the Players from both sides went on to greater achievements in the years that followed. Panner could not travel because he was away on a school outing. His younger brother Donal played and in later years won two National League medals with the Dubs at corner forward in 1987 and 1991. Also on the Syls side were Alex Stenson and his brother Kieran Stenson as well as Martin Sheridan and Mick Roche who Played U16 hurling & football under age for the Dubs.
On the Tyrellspass side Anthony Brady later played Senior Football & Hurling for Westmeath and later for London. He was a gifted full back and marked Tom McCormack of Erins Isle/Dublin in the Leinster minor final of 1982. At number 15 that day for Dublin was Liam Downey of Syls. and the Dubs Goalkeeper was one Joe McNally.
Back to the Tyrrellspass game Frank Ryan also played Senior Football for Westmeath and later managed Tyrrellspass to Senior County Sucess in 1999. Joe & Anthony Glennon Denis's son also played for Westmeath.
This should be another great day for both clubs and will no doubt turn into an annual event.
Le meas,
Eddie
